What a jam-packed novel! Castillo clearly presents her opinion of the Chicano culture through mysticism and the town of Tome -- mostly focusing on Sofi and her four daughters. Rich with undercurrents of multiple ideas: rebirth through strife, oppression of natives, female empowerment, and many many more. It made my head spin with its equal parts engagement, equal parts aggression. I can see why this is so commonly used as a reading assignment!
